Full steam ahead for retrofit improved energy efficiency scheme

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Following a pilot scheme with Equans to increase the thermal efficiency of three low-rise apartment blocks in Birmingham to the PAS 2035 standard (retrofit improved energy efficiency), the project is now commencing on-site with eighteen further low-rise apartment blocks totalling 174 dwelling units across five phases.

The PAS 2035 standard is what is referred to as a ‘whole house’ or ‘whole building’ retrofit concerning domestic dwellings and is an approach to the installation of energy efficiency measures from a technical standpoint and other factors such as occupancy comfort.

To meet the requirements of the PAS 2035 standard, the scheme comprises wrapping the external envelope in a brick slip and rendered external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS), new uPVC windows, increased loft insulation, new mechanical ventilation and extract systems and new solar PV panels. The overall scheme has a 15-month construction phase with completion due in early 2024.
